Talkin’ History! Series
Geology, Geography & Glaciers in the Finger Lakes
We love our Finger Lakes, but do you know how they got here? Rick Bates uses words we can all understand, along with images, to explain how the land beneath our feet came to be here and how glaciers played a prominent role in shaping our current geography in this region we know and love.
On July 31, at 6:00 p.m., Rick Bates, President of the Steuben County Historical Society, will give a talk at the Burdett Fire Hall. Bates is a retired social studies teacher and is equally passionate about Finger Lakes geology. He has given talks throughout the region on the subject.
Carol Fagnan Presents: “Founding Fathers of Catharine”
Lake Grove Park will once again be host to one of our summer talks. On August 2, at 1:00 p.m., Carol Fagnan will present on the research and writing of Bennet Staffa. Bennet was a Cornell college student who worked as a summer intern with Carol in 2023 on this project.
Carol’s work, research, and publications on the Town of Catharine and Schuyler County history are well known. Join us for an afternoon delving deeper into the lives of men who influenced the growth of Schuyler County. We will also have copies of both Carol’s and Bennet’s books for sale.
Rocco 1935, by Jim Potter
Every family has their stories and memories of hearing those stories told. Jim Potter’s family was no different, and his family roots in Schuyler County run deep. Some of his fondest memories are of his grandfather telling stories. Jim says he always wanted to write a book, and the pandemic offered the opportunity.
Join us at the Clute Park 1923 Pavilion on August 16 at 2:00 p.m. as Jim talks about the stories that inspired his first book. This talk will take place during the Italian-American Festival in the pavilion that has so much meaning to the family.
